Thousands of people are tweeting moving tributes to the fallen this weekend. I created this Memorial Day Monitor to capture as many of those tributes as possible.
I think it is important to remember on this day that countless, often silent, sacrifices are made by men and women who are not in uniform. And also that pain and suffering reaches well past the battlefield to touch those who send husbands, sons, fathers, wives, daughters, mothers, and friends off to war. All of them are worthy of remembrance today.
“In great deeds, something abides. On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls… generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream; and lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls.” – Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
Thank you all for your service and great deeds.
