birdflu Hong Kong Raises Alert Level After H5N1 Bird Flu Found Live Streams Added

No human cases have been discovered but this is not good news:

Hong Kong suspended the sale and import of live poultry for 21 days after finding the H5N1 bird flu virus in a chicken carcass, York Chow, secretary for food and health, said in a statement on the government website today.

…More than 17,000 chickens have been ordered to be destroyed at the Cheung Sha Wan market, according to a statement today released on the Hong Kong government website. Public hospitals in the city activated their “serious” response level and enhanced surveillance after the government discovered the H5N1- infected chicken carcass.

This comes at an interesting time, with some medical and national security experts worried about recent research findings which, if fully published, could aid those wishing to weaponize the virus.

I have released a new monitor that is streaming tweets about H5N1, influenza, flu, avian flu, and bird flu. It’s live at http://flu.blogsofwar.com.
