Battlefield Skyhook Robocopter ‘Passes US Marines’ Test’
The deadline for makers to bring forward unmanned skyhook robocopters – intended to move battlefield supplies in Afghanistan as soon as this year – is upon us, and one team at least is claiming a successful demonstration. The Kaman K-MAX intermesh rotor helicopter. US defence colossus Lockheed, teamed with intermesh-rotor whirlybird maker Kaman, say that their droid chopper has managed to pass the tests set out for it by the US Marines under their “IMMEDIATE CARGO UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM” project.
Siddique Terrorism Charges in Detail
A Scottish student has been released after his conviction on a terrorism charge was overturned by Appeal Court judges. Mohammed Atif Siddique, 24, a student from Alva, Clackmannanshire, was found guilty of the charge after a trial in 2007. But appeal judges said in January the conviction amounted to a miscarriage of justice.He remains convicted of three other charges – two related to terrorism and one to a breach of the peace.
GSA, DISA Ready $5B Satellite Opportunity
The multiple-award schedule and indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity FCSA is a joint venture of GSA and the Defense Information Systems Agency. It’s intended to replace satellite communications contracts that will expire over the next two and a half years and will be open to defense and civilian agencies as well as state, local and tribal governments, public schools and colleges, and public authorities.

One of the most tantalizing lines buried in the fiscal 2011 budget request for the Defense Information Systems Agency is a $102.8 million single item for a Senior Leadership Enterprise communications system. The DISA budget says the system supports “National Leadership Command Capabilities and is classified.”
Does India Need Anti-Satellite Capability?
Expressing concerns about China’s growing defence capabilities, particularly its anti-satellite weapon system, a few days back Air Chief Marshal P V Naik sought the development of India’s own missile system that can destroy enemy satellites. “Our satellites are vulnerable to ASAT weapon systems because our neighbourhood possesses one,” Naik said while delivering the Air Chief Marshal L M Katre memorial lecture. He underlined the need for India to develop ASAT technology and referred to it as “one of our challenges of future war capability.”
Darpa’s ‘Transparent Earth’ Plan Will Find You Underground
So maybe Darpa wants to protect civilian populations from the ravages of natural disasters. But those same tools could also be used for war-fighting purposes, suspects one unnamed geoscientist. “All of my ’science is good!’ tree-hugging comments aside, what this program is probably really about is detecting, targeting, and destroying hard and buried underground facility (UGF) targets,” he said.
