Captain Phillips, the US Navy and the Maersk Alabama crew are to be commended for their resolution of the problem. Knowing that their fate would be in the hands of Obama and an inept State Department if they were to be captured, the crew devised a good plan to minimize risk to most of the crew. This limited Obama’s options – which was an extremely good thing. Obama would have loved the chance to take up the issue in the UN and would have been fine letting the crew rot in Mogadishu.
The crew of the Maersk Alabama prevented Obama from having to confront another Tehran Hostage Crisis. It is Obama who owes the crew a big “thank you.”
