Rielle Hunter Will Not Participate in Paternity Tests to Determine Baby’s Father

Well, isn’t this convenient for John Edwards. I wonder how much it cost:

The woman who had an extramarital affair with former presidential candidate John Edwards won’t seek a paternity test to prove whether he’s the father of her 5-month-old child, her lawyer said Saturday.

In a statement he provided to the Washington Post, attorney Robert Gordon said that Rielle Hunter is a private citizen and that she will not comment further on the media frenzy sparked Friday when Edwards publicly acknowledged the affair.

“She wishes to maintain her privacy” and the privacy of her child, Gordon said in the statement. “Furthermore, Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her … privacy now or in the future.”

Gordon said Saturday that he would not immediately be releasing the statement to anyone else and will not be doing interviews about it.

Who knows how many layers of lies and weird financial exchanges are buried in this story. It doesn’t really matter, unless laws were broken, because anyone with half a brain can see right through all of them.

Edwards lied to protect his wife and family from the yellow journalism that has erupted; Bush/Cheney lied to start a war, and tens of thousands of people have died.

The big loser in all this? The child herself. She did nothing wrong, but will have a scarlet letter of being a bastard child, since her parentage appears to be an open question for the immediate future. If Ms. Hunter (or whatever she’s calling herself today) really wanted to put this issue to bed, she’d get the test done and settle this.

This would also help Edwards in that it would preserve what microscopic shred of credibility he has left.

I’m libertarian, but I always liked Clinton and Edward personally because their concern was genuine for ordinary folks even though I disagreed with much of their politics (and I still believe that). I find it disingenuous that Edwards would not have come out and discussed this soon after coming clean with his family in 2006. Ditto with Bill.
Edwards should participate in the great debate of ideas around the future of our country. Americans can and do forgive sin, it’s the hypocrisy and falsehoods committed in keeping secret what was bound to come out that disgusts us. It will be a long time before he can re-join the debate with any credibility, and that’s a loss for all Americans.
