Live Updates: (Most recent at top)
Update: That’s it. There wasn’t a particullarly strong performance by any of the candidates although Obama clearly did well. It will be interesting to see how the unanimous support for raising taxes plays with real Americans. Scroll down and read up from the bottom if you want to read the updates in order.
Update: John Edwards would spend his first 100 days traveling the world. The man is just clueless. Clinton and Obama would bring the troops home. Bill Richardson would offer pre-school to every American – young Americans I hope. Biden would defuse the situation with Iran. Kucinich would channel celestial beings – just kidding – he would bail out of NAFTA and the WTO and generally socialize the entire country. Gravel is just pissed and Dodd would focus on constitional rights.
Update: Gravel just went off and called everyone on the stage out for raiding social security. It was creepy and cool at the same time.
Update: Dodd supports earmarks. Of course, most of them do even if they say otherwise. “They’re not going to give the President line item veto.” was Gravel’s response and he’s right.
Update: John Edwards doesn’t know what a rich person is. That might be the most hilarious line of the night.
Update: Biden just exposed the silliness of the Darfur debate by screaming (I paraphrase) 50,000 people will be dead before the other candidates finish talking.
Update: Bill Richardson wants to let the Chinese handle Darfur. And if they won’t do it we’ll refuse to play in the Olympics. That’s just a shockingly bad idea.
Update: Obama’s response on the handling of Osama – kill him – and then all the candidates (except Kucinich) fell over themselves to demonstrate that they’d kill Obama even if it resulted in civilian casualties. It’s the right answer, within reason of course, but the left has got to be hating that.
Update: Hillary just acknowledged that the Iranians are supply insurgents in Iraq with weapons. I’m just noting that because she’ll deny it when the Bush administration finally bombs them back to the stone age.
Update: Mike Gravel just kicked Obama’s ass too – this time on the Walter Reed issue. I’m expecting John Edwards to come to his defense any minute.
Update: Bill Richardson just kicked Obama’s ass on the veteran’s healthcare issue.
Update: Obama is talking about deployment cycles and vet support. Those issues will play well.
Update: What would Kucinich do to rebuild the military? Cut military spending.
Update: Audience questions are up next. Obama won the first hour easily. I’m surprised to hear that Hillary ate up the most time. It didn’t seem like it. Maybe it’s because she didn’t say much during those 9 minutes.
Update: Does Wolf Blitzer hate Bill Richardson. It seems like he cuts him off every time he opens his mouth.
Update: John Edwards has a problem with companies making “record amounts of money”. That’s just funny.
Update: Dodd hasn’t said anything of substance all night. How would he reduce gas prices – by making polluting fuels more expensive. Even Wolf Blitzer is confused.
Update: Props to Gravel for the best line of the night. When asked how he’d use Bill Clinton he said that he’d send him out as a roving ambassador and that “he can take his wife with him.” I bet Hillary wants to claw his eyes out.
Update: They’re talking about gay marriage. I’m waiting for John Edwards to propose to Obama.
Update: They’re all opposed to “Don’t Ask – Don’t Tell” and I have to agree. Military service should be open to all.
Update: Isn’t Hillary supposed to be the big dog here? She’s mostly just sitting there with a freaky grin on her face while Obama and Edwards toss it back in forth. It’s like they’re playing keep away.
Update: John Edwards is kissing up to Obama every time he speaks.
Update: Hillary Clinton is also going to raise taxes by about a hundred billion dollars. That’s old news I know.
Update: Obama doesn’t believe that business should be able to “hoard their profits.” Does that require any explanation?
Update: I’m going to break with my promise to ignore John Edwards to mention that he just promised to raise taxes by about a hundred billion dollars.
Update: Senator Dodd sends props to Obama too. I’m noticing a pattern here.
Update: I’m no fan of Obama but he outclasses everyone else on that stage by a huge margin.
Update: Biden likes the new immigration bill because it has a shorter fence – even though he also voted for a longer fence. Uh, what?
Update: Mike Gravel reminds me of one of those creepy old guys who lives to keep the neighbor kid’s football when it lands on his lawn. How in the hell did he get up there?
Update: Wolf is hitting them on their failure to read the pre-war National Intelligence Estimate. The response from Hillary was weak. John Edwards’ was better. He praised Obama’s consistency. He must want another VP slot.
Update: I’m not feeling so bad about the Republican class right not. Most of the Democrats are incoherent. The ones who aren’t are mostly just – odd.
Update: Mike Gravel just made Bill Richardson look senile.
Update: Wolf just raised the possibility of a post-pullout genocide in Iraq. Bill Richardson apparently has nothing to say on the issue.
Update: Hillary Clinton claimed to be “speaking out from the outside” on the war. Hillary Clinton as outsider? Really? Wow.
Update: John Edwards pulls the war as bumper sticker slogan card again. I’ll be ignoring everything else he says tonight. Kucinich has more credibility than this guy.
Update: Obama doesn’t understand Islamic terrorism if he honestly believes that their recruiting techniques grew out of the war in Iraq. Has he heard of Chechnya or pre-Taliban Afghanistan?
Update: Is Mike Gravel senile?
