Email: A Ron Paul Supporter Responds

by John Little on 1/06/2007

Well, I told the Ron Paul supporters that I’d let them have their say after I gave them both barrels a few days ago. I’ll admit that calling them “googly-eyed unblinking freaks” wasn’t real nice but I have to do something to keep myself entertained around here. Predictably, the hate mail started arriving immediately. None of it was as frightening as the stuff I get from terrorists or the animal rights folks but some of it was amusing. To their credit quite a few of his supporters responded to my challenge and submitted reasonable endorsements of their candidate. David Ghizzoni’s stands out:

I’d be happy to respond to your concerns about Ron Paul supporters.

Its true the what you describe as “truthers” and others support Dr. Paul. No argument from me on that point. What you have to ask yourself is why do they support him. This is what gets at the root of the support for Dr. Paul, not just from the fringe as you would say but from everyday average people across the nation. He speaks truth. He has a proven track record of voting by the constitution. Finally he speaks with simple common sense to the manufactured sound bite answers of the “front runners.”

Ron Paul has garnered support from all walks of America and to me that by itself should be the best indication of the truth and sincerity of his platform. It stands for what Americans from all walks of life can rally behind. He may not share an individuals personal beliefs on an issue but he doesn’t allow that to get in the way of his duty to vote based on his oath of office.

Americans seem to have forgotten that our leaders are not there to push our personal agendas on the nation, but are there instead to prevent just that. We as Americans are not going to agree with one another on every issue, we don’t expect to. We need someone at the top who will stand for honesty and openness in their dialog with us and Ron Paul is the only candidate that is showing a predisposition to do just that.

I hope, as do many people, that just because Ron Paul gets support from people you don’t personally agree with on one or more issues, you take the time to look at his voting record in congress and if you believe in the constitution, and you believe in the greatness of our country, you will give his message a chance. Based on his merits, based on his actions, and not dismiss him out of hand based on a portion of his supporters.

Thank you for opening a dialog on this issue.

So there you go. Ron Paul still isn’t making it to my 2008 short list but David is certainly a better representative than the truthers.

I would like to voice my 2 cents on this. I am 27 a former Marine and my entire family is military. I am a History Major at UNLV and I own a small clothing business in its infancy in Vegas. I support Ron Paul for several reasons. I believe he will be the best possible candidate to run for president in the last 40 years. We have seen a continual increase in the number of citizens that seem to think it is acceptable for the government to do what it pleases and for some reason more and more people keep perpetuating that false assertion. Ron Paul is all about the Constitution which we seem to lost all understanding of. Ask most kids graduating from college what the 4th or 5th or 1st amendment’s are and they will undoubtably get it wrong. It doesnt surprise me that most people don’t think Ron Paul can win or that he is a “nut”. They are constantly told that by FOX and CNN and when they can’t discredit him any longer they simply remove the Election coverage from the airwaves and only give you the three or four candidates that will give them the biggest boost if you vote for them. Please if anyone doesnt believe that big business is running the news media just do a little research on clear channel and fox news funding. I am not a conspiracy nut but, facts are facts. Ron Paul gives the average man hope just the way that JFK did. Unlike JFK however, Ron Pauls supporters live in a time where the population is much less educated and thinks for themselves alot less. I do not believe most young Americans with the ability to vote will even take part in this election because they find MTV and American Idol much more important. The fact is America is in the condition that it is not because of politicians but, because of Americans of all ages and races allowing the government to think for them and allowing it to push further and further into our personal lives. Mark my words and remember the date so later I can say I told you so. “If Americans do not elect Ron Paul a Democratic Candidate will win and that candidate will not remove us from the war as they promised they would. In fact they will continue the perpetual war as seen in 1984(orwell). They will continue to push the government onto us and gun control will become one of the main platforms of their cabinet. Police brutality will become an ever occuring thing and the dollar will be devalued to the point of economic collapse. Government dependency will grow and poverty will increase.” I am not saying this from a bipartisan stand point. I am simply saying they are using our lack of knowledge of the system and the people behind the scenes to munipulate how we behave. Ron Paul is the only candidate that has touched the heart of the issue and the things that make Americans truly able to keep the government away from our personal lives. These issues are the IRS,Federal Reserve, CIA, and Gun control. The Federal Reserve is not a branch of the Government and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. There is no law on the books that says you must pay an income tax yet we are forced to illegally by the IRS again I challenge anyone to find the law, and…. the CIA has been committing crimes across the globe since its inception after world war 2 when it was the OSS. Again I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. My degree is nearly complete and after that I will be getting my docterate in History. Ron Paul is not some quack and most of the evidence of the “truthers” has not been combatted with any concrete evidence rather they are simply slapped down as Conspiracy Lunatics. I do not support all of the theories of the “Truthers” but, I find it interesting that in an age where information is everywhere the only thing we can’t fight their information with facts. Ron Paul for pres! SEMPER FI!!!

I am a former Infantryman/ Recon from the Viet Nam Era.
I’m also an injured Military Contractor home from Afghanistan. (Remember that one?)

I am a supporter of Dr. Ron Paul because he tells the truth. He actually believes the Oath that we both have taken “To Protect and Defend the Constitution of The United States of America from all enemies, foriegn and domestic.” He considers it sacred, as do I.

I’ve been to the War Zones. I’ve seen first hand what is happening there. I can also see what has happened to my country over the past 40 years.

It shames me to see that our elected representatives don’t care the least about our Constitution.
They only seem to care about themselves, what they can get, and Big Business. They’ve figured out how to get everything THEY’ve ever wanted at OUR expense.

They’ve already started to erode our soveriegnty with the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America. I’ve read it! George Bush signed it on March 27th,2004 in Crockett, Texas. Prime Minister Martin & Vincente Fox were the other signers. Look it up!

All I want is an America that I saw as a child. I want it for my children and grand-children. They deserve the same chance at Freedom and LIBERTY that we have had.

Our forefathers risked,or gave, their lives that we might have Freedom and Liberty. For us to do any less would be unthinkable. Our posterity deserve the same chances as we.

I’ve found that a lot of Ron Paul supporters come from a few different categories: political apathetics; 20-29 year old males; military personnel; conspiracy nuts; and libertarian-oriented folk in general.

When I mention those who are apathetic politically, you must consider how the last 8 years in America has affected them. The war has been a central issue in a presidential administration laced with more conspiracies than ever before. Furthermore, there seems to be very few politicians with a genuine plan to solve any of America’s problems, be it debt, war, immigration, or health care. For some, the two party system has morphed into a creature unrecognizable by those who used to support it. For many, Ron Paul offers a bit of hope.

Ron Paul’s supporter base seems most visible on the internet. Interestingly enough, many of his supporters are a young crowd, a body of people unstirred by many of this country’s presidential elections. This group is tech savvy, intelligent, and often more informed about the candidates then any other politician’s supporters. Many of Huckabee’s, Clinton’s, Obama’s, and Romney’s supporters are older, and receive much of their political information through the biased feeds known as FoxNews and MSNBC. Fortunately for Paul, his supporters are extremely active, and have given him a chance when no political pundit would.

I believe two military personnel have commented before me, so I will skip this topic on account of its apparent obviousness.

Conspiracy nuts and libertarian minded folk: Why have I grouped them together? Regardless of the cause, their problems will be solved with a smaller federal government with less power. Conspiracy nuts fear the day (as do I) then the American and African Unions emerge, and frighteningly imitate Orwell’s fictional ’1984′, and the bible’s book of revelations. I don’t know if I follow this crowd, but the talk of the ‘Amero’ and a national ID card (better yet, look up VeriChip) seem like more plausible conspiracy theories every year. Ron Paul is actively against a large role wielded by a centralized power, as are libertarians, and the original framers of the US constitution.

You can see why RP supporters often consider him “Hope for America.” After all, the quality of American politics has rapidly decayed to the point where its followers may actually support a 3rd party candidate for the first time in over 150 years.
