IAEA: Iranian Nukes 3-8 Years Away

What I don’t understand is why everyone is focusing on thermonuclear weapons. Isn’t it just as terrifying to have a terrorist state, with (by their own admission) terror networks worldwide, sitting on stockpiles of weapons-grade uranium? We’re screwed either way really.

Anyway, Iranian nukes are just around the corner:

The head of the UN nuclear agency says he agrees with CIA estimates that Iran is three to eight years from being able to make nuclear weapons.

The agency head is also urging the US and other powers to pursue talks with Iran, saying that is the best way to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear arms.

Yesterday, the agency reported that Iran’s uranium enrichment program was expanding in defiance of UN demands that it be suspended.

The report also warns that the agency’s knowledge of those activities is shrinking.

Unfortunately, Dr. ElBaradei is also floating a ludicrous “New Nuclear Security Paradigm” proposal:

IAEA Director General, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, has called for the development and implementation of a new collective security paradigm in which no country relies on nuclear weapons for its security.

Speaking at the International Conference on the Prevention of Nuclear Catastrophe, held in Luxembourg on 24 May 2007, Dr. ElBaradei warned the audience that the prospects for progress in preventing nuclear catastrophe will remain grim unless the international community begins working on a new security regime.

“The solution, in my view, lies in creating an environment in which nuclear weapons are universally banned, morally abhorred, and their futility unmasked,” he said

His solution is really just a convenient excuse to lobby for more money and more power. It’s just too over the top to be credible.
