Senate Panel Approves Resolution Opposing Bush’s War Plan
by John Little on 24/01/2007It’s nonbinding:
The Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee dismissed President Bush’s plans to increase troops strength in Iraq on Wednesday as “not in the national interest,” an unusual wartime repudiation of the commander in chief.
The vote on the nonbinding measure was 12-9 and largely along party lines.
“We better be damn sure we know what we’re doing, all of us, before we put 22,000 more Americans into that grinder,” said Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, the sole Republican to join 11 Democrats in support of the measure.
Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., the panel’s chairman, said the legislation is “not an attempt to embarrass the president. … It’s an attempt to save the president from making a significant mistake with regard to our policy in Iraq.”
You’ll probably see Ahmednejad, Ayman Al Zawahiri, Hugo Chavez, and company approvingly reference this resolution in the near future. Sen. Chuck Hagel and the Democrats have only succeeded in scoring a propaganda win for our enemies with this unfortunate action.
Right Voices: This was to be expected although it will not stop the POTUS from sending the troops. I do need to make this point though; For a party that was so concerned about the POTUS overstepping his authority, they have no qualms about overstepping theirs!
Hot Air: The AP counts nine Republicans, including Sam Brownback, as supporters of some of the various anti-surge resolutions floating around the Senate right now. They want a floor vote next week.
Hannity.com: The point is quite clear. It is to embolden the Islamo-facists which will make military and thus political success in Iraq less likely which in turn will make George Bush look worse. The Democrats (in general) are so intent at destroying Bush that they do not care who else or what else is destroyed in the process.
