Last week I specualted that we were probably more active in the effort to drive Islamists out of Somalia than reported. Thankfully that seems to be true:
A U.S. gunship attacked suspected al Qaeda targets in southern Somalia, a senior Pentagon official said Monday.
The AC-130 flew its mission within the last 24 hours, the official told CNN on Monday. The operation was launched based on intelligence that suspected al Qaeda terrorists were at the location, but there was no immediate indication of how successful the strike had been.
The operation was reportedly staged to go after high profile terrorists:
One or more U.S. military gunships struck at least two sites in Somalia where Islamists were believed to be sheltering suspects in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. Embassies in East Africa and many people were killed, Somali officials and witnesses said Tuesday.
CNN is reporting additional activity:
A witness says helicopter gunships have launchd new attacks in Somalia close to scene of an earlier U.S. airstrike, The Associated Press reports.
I suspect that additional activity is on the horizon. This is likely just the most visible indicator of a much broader range of military and diplomatic activity.
