Holiday Attack Fears Focus on London

by John Little on 22/12/2006

I first mentioned this a few days ago but the bad news continues (H/T: Hot Air) to trickle out:

British intelligence and law enforcement officials have passed on a grim assessment to their U.S. counterparts, “It will be a miracle if there isn’t a terror attack over the holidays in London,” a senior American law enforcement official tells ABCNews.com.

British police have been quietly carrying out a series of key arrests as they continue to track at least six active “plots” tied to what they call “al Qaeda of England.”

Officials said they could not cite any specific date or target but said al Qaeda had planned previous operations during the Christmas holidays that had been disrupted.

“It is not a matter of if there will be an attack, but how bad the attack will be,” an intelligence official told ABCNews.com.

Officials seem to be exceptionally worried about a rumored group of Al Qaeda trained westerners called “The English Brothers“.

According to Newsweek, the gang (a dozen 20-somethings, primarily Brits, plus a couple Norwegians and one Australian) is just wrapping up a year-long training course in the tribal Waziristan area of Pakistan designed to ready them for their special missions back home.

I haven’t been able to any news about the radioactive material reportedly on the loose in Albania.

Blackfive: Thoughts and prayers to the people of London this Christmas. And more thoughts and prayers for the police to stop it from happening.

Texas Hold’em Blogger: Two things have emboldened the enemy: the results at the polls in the midterm elections and the clear message of retreat sent by the Iraq Surrender Group.

Confederate Yankee: I question the timing, and I mean that quite seriously. If these rumored terrorists are indeed plotting a Christmastime attack, it would seem that at least part of the goal would be to drive a deeper wedge between British Muslim “other” and the overwhelming majority of a too-politically correct and predominately Anglo-Christian nation.

Stop the ACLU: It would serve moderate Muslims living in the Western world well to start condemning Islamist terrorists as loudly, forcefully, unconditionally, and publicly as possible. Publicity stunts like the blatant provocation pulled off by the flying imams have soured the general public’s mood toward Muslims. A high-profile terrorist attack during the holidays could set off vigilante retaliatory attacks.

Hang Right Politics: Pray for the people of London, and for British intelligence and law enforcement so they stop these scum before they murder in the name of their god.

Carol Platt Liebau: Yes, these are definitely the kind of creeps America should negotiate with. Not.
