Bloggers React: The Iraq Study Group Report

The report is now available. I’ll be rounding up some reaction from the blogosphere and add my own thoughts after I’ve read thought the report. My initial thoughts are that the ideas presented in the report don’t seem worthy of the hype surrounding it. It appears to be your typical bipartisan commission report – lacking in both conviction and substance.

Little Green Footballs: It advocates “dialog” with our worst enemies, including the madman who, with exquisite timing, just told the West to convert or die.

Flopping Aces: Good to hear they don’t want to surrender quickly but this whole report smacks of ways to lose gracefully to me.

Michelle Malkin: To one prominent Democrat congressman–Nancy Pelosi’s choice for intel chairman–that means more troops in Iraq. Yes, he said more. Meanwhile, Rahm Emanuel looks like he’s already preparing to de-fund the war.

Wizbang!: Our Brave Soldiers Did Not Die Just To Mitigate Defeat.

Jules Crittenden: Best question so far from the press conference: You guys went to Iraq and didn’t even leave the Green Zone. Why should the president listen to you instead of all his other advisors. Another good one, where’s the word victory?

Right Wing Nuthouse: What could be significant about the ISG is that they may have initiated a change in the national conversation about Iraq. By painting such a dire picture of what is happening there and pointing out the catastrophe that is in the making, while establishing themselves as a bi-partisan voice, perhaps we can get away from this stupid, self defeating back and forth about “blame” which only scores political points and matters not a bit to what needs to be done, and start working together to figure out how we’re going to get out of this mess without blowing up the world in the process.

Don Surber: As to this report, I say it is spinach and to hell with it. Make adjustments. Stay the course. And be polite to those who say we cannot win.

The Political Pit Bull: Anyway, bottom line, I don’t think we should get too worked up about this report. It’s only an addition to the discussion about what to do next; ideas are never a bad thing. But, fortunately, I think it’s safe to bet that it’s not going to define a new strategy in Iraq.

Hyscience: While Mahmoud flirts with dancing girls, the U.S. continues to flirt with disaster by thinking Iran can be trusted and that Iran will help us in Iraq. The Iranian regime has always looked at Iraq as the grand prize in its drive to expand its dominance across the Middle East.

Suitably Flip: But from the excerpts available thus far, I disagree with Bush’s characterization that the report brings interesting proposals. The proposal I’ve read by and large either are already being carried out, are for other countries, or are applicable only once the hard part’s over.

Hot Air: I leave you with this, from the executive summary. We need to solve the Israel-Palestinian issue. And we also need to engage in dialogue with Iran, which is committed to the destruction of Israel. Mazel tov.

Stop the ACLU: I’m hoping President Bush takes these suggestions with a huge grain of salt. I’m also hoping he finds his spine again very soon.
