Freeganism?

There’s always something to blog about at IndyMedia. This discussion, about eating from dumpsters to fight capitalism, had me rolling:

The point of freeganism is to reduce consumption, primarily this targets the animal industry, but how much better is it to support a diet based on industrial vegetable products (It takes massive business to produce large quantities of vegetables, not to mention the processed foods). This is not to say don’t buy vegan, definately if you’re going to purchase something, buy vegan, but if you can dumpstering is far better. Reduce the contribution to industry and capitalism (Even vegan capitalism). Eat dumpstered meat if you can stomach it and it’s between that and purchasing something vegan with the equivilent nutrients. Dumpstered eggs, and dairy are fine as well… and just to note dumpstering cheese is about the safest thing there is. If it’s questionable just cut the mold off like you would if it had been in your fridge. And certainly all freegans would agree that eating something that somebody had already purchased and were going to eat anyway is not freegan in the least. But dumpstering, stealing, table scraping eating in ways that do not contribute to capitalism at all. Vegans really need to stop being squeamish and step up, because they’re supporting terrible oppressions through industrial capitalism that make their arguments for veganism seem rather empty. Freeganism is the only diet of total conscience.

Hilarious stuff – until I realized that these are the people controlling our House and Senate.
