Hezbollah: Tel Aviv Residents Will Be Given One Hour to Flee – 500 Missiles Targeting City
by John Little on 19/07/2006I doubt this is true. If it is, and it occurs, expect the scope of this war to widen significantly:
Arab press sources close to the Hizbullah say that residents of Tel Aviv will be given one hour to flee before the terrorist group launches a barrage of missiles at the city. The unnamed sources are quoted by the Palestinian Authority-based news agency Ma’an as saying:
“The Lebanese resistance is preparing a retaliation parallel to Israel’s military actions. Hassan Nasrallah will address the people of Tel Aviv and warn them to evacuate the city within one hour. As soon as the delay ends, hundreds of heavy missiles will start landing in the city, which has been divided into squares in order to let damage reach every inch of the city. An estimated 500 missiles are expected to land in Tel Aviv in a short period of time.”
Jerusalem Newswire quotes Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dan Gillerman’s position on a Tel Aviv strike:
“If missiles hit Tel Aviv, it will not be an escalation, it will be doomsday. …We would consider it something [Hizb'allah] and their sponsors, mainly in Iran and Syria, would pay very, very dearly for.”
If you want a world war, maybe even a limited nuclear war (with Israel leading the way) the near destruction of Tel Aviv would certainly get you started.
Anyway, I doubt that Hezbollah is capable of an attack on this scale. They would need more than missiles. They’d also need sophisticated planning, communication, resources, and the time to get everything in place while hostile Israeli warplanes patrol overhead. A few missiles here and there (that’s a few missiles are possible in Tel Aviv – Katyushas will rain down in large numbers elsewhere), some warnings, and a lot of fear and chaos are much more likely. We’ll know, either way, soon.
