This is one of the more complete and accurate Linux reviews I’ve found:
Canonical’s Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is an excellent Linux-based operating system—so excellent, in fact, that it not only earned eWEEK Labs’ Analyst’s Choice designation but has also become our clear favorite among Linux desktop distributions. This latest Ubuntu release, which became available in June, has won our ardor with a tight focus on desktop usability; an extremely active, helpful and organized user community; and a software installation and management framework that’s unsurpassed on any OS platform.
In addition to outperforming Linux rivals as a desktop OS, we found that Ubuntu is a solid choice for server deployments

Eweek is blowing the horn way too soon. Xgl is still buggy and can’t play most 3d games. A desktop is useless if you cant play counter strike, right?
XGL is still in development and is an optional addition to Ubuntu. It’s not part of the standard distribution yet.
It is easy enough to install and relatively solid (no issues on my desktop in a few days of use) but if gaming is a priority I wouldn’t install it yet. However, there are workarounds on the Ubuntu forums for gamers who want to have both.
This is cutting edge stuff with a lot of momentum behind it. I think you’ll see the issues worked out pretty quickly.
