Over 1,000 Katyushas Fired at Israel

I wonder if the media will repeat this number:

As the Katyushas fired at Israel pass the 1,000 mark – hundreds of other projectiles have also been fired – the IDF continues to bombard southern Lebanese villages from where the rockets are fired.

Now consider the kind of casualty figures we’d be seeing if the Israelis dropped 1,000 of their most powerful bombs on Beirut without any attempt to minimize civilian casualties. Or better yet, imagine the death and destruction that we’d be witnessing if Israel adopted the Hezbollah/Hamas model and decided to maximize civilian casualties.

Disproportionate force? I’d say Israel is showing disproportionate restraint.

  1. Um, Israel has already dropped 1,000 bombs on Beirut. They are not all among their most powerful, but they are far more powerful than the rockets Hezbollah is firing.

A disproportionate response is fine, as long as it’s directed at Hezbollah. So far, it has not been. All Israel has succeeded in doing is killing innocents. They have destroyed Beirut and have killed very few Hezbollah militants.

That wasn’t my point at all. I wrote:

You can fixate on the number but you can’t deny that Israel has done it’s best to avoid casualties when faced with an ememy that weaves it’s military capability into the civilian infrastructure.

If Hezbollah actually cared about innocent people, they wouldn’t have their facilities in civilian neighborhoods. And while portions of Beirut are heavily damaged, the city is far from destroyed.
