Newt Gingrich: It’s World War III
by John Little on 16/07/2006Newt seems to have come around but will he have an impact?:
Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.
“We need to have the militancy that says ‘We’re not going to lose a city,’ ” Gingrich said. He talks about the need to recognize World War III as important for military strategy and political strategy.
Gingrich said he is “very worried” about Republican’s facing fall elections and says the party must have the “nerve” to nationalize the elections and make the 2006 campaigns about a liberal Democratic agenda rather than about President Bush’s record.
A lot of us have been saying this for a while and a recent Michael Goodwin column seemed to get some attention. This administration has been all over the map in it’s characterization of this war. We’ve been through periods where we were threatening to hunt down terrorists and their supporters around the globe (telling terrorist supporting states that they we either with us or against us) and confusing periods of silence followed by a near reversal of our initial determination. Instead of preparing the American public for a long difficult war the message has evolved into “Yeah we’re at war but you’re not at risk. Well sometimes you are but don’t worry about it. Keep on shoppin’.”
The war in Israel, which is our war too, is a great opportunity for the President to continue to make his case to the American people. But the official response seems to be one of casual interest and concern instead of the concrete support an ally fighting our war deserves. If Americans ultimately reject this war, and in the near term the Republican party, it will be a result of this administration’s communication failures not our collective will. We’re in a war for our survival and it’s time to acknowledge it.
