Longtime BoW reader Mike S. asks:

“You used to blog a lot about your switch to Ubuntu linux. Are you still using it?”

Yep! I don’t think that I’ve used Windows at home since early 2004.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 6.06. It’s far and away the slickest operating system I’ve ever used. When things get crazy and I’m trying to follow breaking news, blog, edit photos and video, and talk to other bloggers online, my 5 virtual desktops (see the video above) make things much more pleasant. The added security (spyware? what’s that?) and stability are also nice. I go months without rebooting. I also swap files between MS Office (work) and OpenOffice.org (home) all the time and I haven’t run into any compatibility issues. I find using XP at work to pretty unpleasant but they won’t let me uninstall it.

You can see a screenshots of my Ubuntu desktop in the Blogs of War Gallery.

If you’ve thought about trying Linux give Ubuntu 6.06 a try. It’s free and the six click install is super easy. You can see screenshots of the installation process here.

I agree that Ubuntu is a very nice Linux distro. Even Breezy Badger was pretty good but a tad slow on my system. Now with Dapper Drake the system is a lot more responsive. Ubuntu is pretty easy for even a Linux newbie to install and use, but then it has all the power of Debian so that you the more hardcore Linux users can really enjoy it too.

Wow i didnt know Ubuntu could look like that. I run suse 10 w/ kde and I play Counter-Stike Source(40-70fps) and BF:2(70-100)fps. I may have to test the waters.

We started using Ubuntu at our Edinburgh bed and breakfast, Garfield guest house. I has been great – no more viruses, malware or spyware! We were having to reinstall Windows every 6 months or so before – it was a real hassle and would best part of a day to get things set-up again. Having moved to Ubuntu we’ve not had ant trouble at all.
